Prescription Remedies:

Diflucan – Diflucan is a little pink pill that is taken one time to treat vaginal yeast infections. It contains 150 mg of fluconazole and penetrates the walls of the vagina for up to three days. This is supposed to be the equivalent of a seven-day cream and, of course, there is no mess involved in taking this little pill. You may feel symptom relief in as little as 24 hours. There are some side effects to this medication, however. Please read the disclaimer found at www.diflucan.com.

In clinical studies, the most common side effects associated with Diflucan were headache (13%), nausea (7%), and abdominal pain (6%). With Diflucan there is the possibility of an increased risk of side effects compared with creams. To prevent heart-related complications, do not take Diflucan if you are taking Propulsid®. In rare instances, serious effects on the liver and serious allergic reactions were reported. Do not take Diflucan if you are nursing. If you are pregnant or taking other medications, consult your doctor.

Nystatin – Nystatin is available in creams, lozenges, liquid, oral suspensions, powder and vaginal tablets. It is used to treat fungal infections that occur in the throat, vagina and mouth. Nystatin works because it prevents fungal organisms from making substances that are vital to their survival. It is generally prescribed for periods of one to three weeks. Your doctor should be involved in the decision of when to stop the Nystatin. There are some drug interactions with Nystatin. Consult your doctor and be certain to tell her about any over-the-counter or pharmaceutical drugs you may be taking.
